Get face painting with Grimas
Grimas water based makeup is ideal for face painting because it has good covering power, dries quickly and resists rubbing off, but is easy to remove with washing or cleansing lotion.
You put it on with a damp sponge or a brush and water.
- If you're new to face painting, animal faces are a good bet to start with. It takes practice to paint a symmetrical face like a clown or a butterfly but animal faces don't have to match side for side so exactly.
Landscapes, especially sunsets, can be simple too.
- A quick wipe with Grimas cleansing lotion or a baby wipe will shift the remains of food, sun screen, old face paint and skin oil, any of which will make it difficult to get an even base colour.
- Try not to use too much water. It makes the base streaky and takes longer to dry. Try for for the thinnest possible coat that will give an even depth of colour. Too thick a base feels uncomfortable for your model and wastes face paint.
- It's easier to do more complicated face painting designs if you start by drawing the outlines lightly with a makeup pencil.
- We recommend the use of cake makeup as a base for face painting because it gives a superb matt background to paint onto and provides additional protection against strong colours like bright yellow and bright red.
- Apply cake with a barely damp sponge. Grimas foam make-up sponges are ideal. Cut them in half before use. This makes a better shape for applying make-up and doubles the number of sponges too! (You should always use a new sponge for each person to avoid spreading infections.)
- Start painting with the lightest colours and work towards the darker shades. Face paint dries quickly, so it is often easier to paint over mistakes than to try to wipe them off while the paint is still wet.
